Yoga for Educators

5 week series | $40 | Begins February 21

Wednesdays, 3:15 PM at Simple Gifts Studio

A growing body of research has already shown that yoga can improve focus, memory, self-esteem, academic performance, and classroom behavior, and can even reduce anxiety and stress in children. (Harvard Health, 2016)

Compared to the kids in the social responsibility program, children with the mindful intervention had 15% better math scores, showed 24% more social behaviors, were 24% less aggressive and perceived themselves as 20% more prosocial. They outperformed their peers in cognitive control, stress levels, emotional control, optimism, empathy, mindfulness and aggression. (Time, 2015)

A unifying sense, the vestibular system, supports good body awareness, attention and emotional regulation. These skills are fundamental to learning in the classroom. (Washington Post, 2016)

You teach what you know, so this will be an experiential opportunity: each week will include a 30-minute personal practice for teachers with modifications for most* body types, followed by different breath exercises and particular postures suitable for classroom use.

Educators and school staff will:

  • Learn the basics of how intentional breath and movement impact the nervous system and how to shift into pre-frontal cortex “thinking brain” for optimal class engagement
  • Understand the effects of stress on a child/adolescent’s body and how to teach skills to assist with self-regulation
  • Experience personally the benefits of mindful breath and movement on stress levels, with increased ability to focus and quiet the mind amid classroom chaos
  • Collaborate on tools to integrate concepts and practices into classroom settings and have a forum to ask questions

Beyond her 200-hour certification from Yoga Alliance, Michele completed training with Zensational Kids’ Educate2Be and Yoga Ed. She works with therapists and social workers at an area mental health practice, and aligns her teaching to practices backed by clinical research, suitable for classroom use.

Those currently registered for the regular Monday night classes can add this series for $25.
